Online Italian exam preparation

Prepare online for your Italian language exam

I offer personalised online preparation for CILS, CELI, PLIDA and Certit up to CEFR level B1, including the A2 and B1 certificates often needed for residency, citizenship or study. We plan the work around the certificate and level you need, so the preparation remains closely connected to your reason for taking the exam.

During the lessons, we work on reading, listening, writing and speaking, giving more time to the parts you find most difficult, so you understand what each task asks of you, the format becomes familiar and exam day feels more manageable.

Why take an Italian language exam?

A recognised certificate gives institutions formal evidence of your Italian level, and the cards below explain the most common reasons students prepare with me.

  • A personal milestone

Set a clear study goal, measure your progress and earn a qualification you can use in Italy or abroad.

  • Work in Italy

A certificate strengthens your CV and may be required for regulated professions such as healthcare and teaching.

  • Italian citizenship

Applications through marriage or residence require at least B1 from a recognised provider such as CILS, CELI, PLIDA or Cert.IT.

  • Study at an Italian university

Italian-taught degree courses often require B2, although requirements can range from B1 to C1 depending on the university and programme.

  • Long-term EU residence

Non-EU citizens applying for an EU long-term residence permit must demonstrate Italian at A2 level.

Four recognised Italian language certifications

CILS, CELI, PLIDA and Certit are four official Italian-as-a-foreign-language certifications issued by recognised institutions and aligned with CEFR levels, although their formats, dates and available versions differ.

CILS

Università per Stranieri di Siena

The Certificazione di Italiano come Lingua Straniera (CILS) is issued by the Università per Stranieri di Siena. CILS covers the full CEFR range from A1 to C2.

CELI

Università per Stranieri di Perugia

The Certificati di Lingua Italiana (CELI) are issued by the Università per Stranieri di Perugia. CELI covers the full CEFR range from A1 to C2.

PLIDA

Società Dante Alighieri

The Progetto Lingua Italiana Dante Alighieri (PLIDA) certification is issued by the Società Dante Alighieri. PLIDA covers the full CEFR range from A1 to C2.

Certit

Università degli Studi Roma Tre

The Certificazione dell'italiano come lingua straniera (Certit) is issued by the Università degli Studi Roma Tre. Certit covers the full CEFR range from A1 to C2.

How online Italian exam preparation works

We start from your current level and work towards the certificate you need, learning its format and timing while spending more time on the sections that need the most attention.

  1. Level diagnostic

We start by placing your Italian on the CEFR scale and confirming exactly which certificate and level you need, so the preparation follows the right exam instead of a generic plan.

  2. Targeted practice per section

We work through each part of the exam in turn, covering reading, listening, writing and speaking while strengthening the skills that carry the most marks for you.

  3. Exam-format familiarity & timing

You get to know how the tasks are worded and structured, and we build a timing strategy so the format itself never catches you out on the day.

  4. Mock tasks & feedback

We practise with exam-style tasks under realistic conditions, then review them together so you know precisely what to improve before you sit the test.

Italian exam preparation questions

The answers below explain what each certificate involves, which practical details may affect your choice and how focused practice fits around the exam you are preparing for.

What is the best Italian certification to get?
There is no single best Italian certification because CILS, CELI, PLIDA and Certit are equivalent at the same CEFR level. In 2011, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the four certification bodies established CLIQ, the Certificazione Lingua Italiana di Qualità, to coordinate certificates issued under a shared quality framework. This means that a B1 CILS, CELI, PLIDA or Certit certificate has the same validity for Italian citizenship, so your choice should depend mainly on practical factors such as nearby exam centres, available dates, fees, result times and the exam format you prefer.
When should I get CILS?
Choose CILS if you need a standard certificate with broad international use or a version designed for integration or citizenship. The standard B1 includes a grammar section and can also be used for citizenship. CILS additionally offers the specialised DIT/C2 exam for qualified foreign teachers who want to apply to teach in Italian schools.
When should I get CELI?
Choose CELI if you want either a general Italian certificate or an exam designed for adult immigrants. The CELI i versions cover levels A1 to B1 and focus on language used in integration contexts, while retaining the same formal recognition as the corresponding general CELI certificates.
When should I get PLIDA?
Choose PLIDA if you are between 13 and 18 or need certification for a specific local purpose. PLIDA Juniores has the same structure and institutional validity as the standard exam, but uses age-appropriate situations. In South Tyrol, PLIDA certificates can also contribute to recognition of the local bilingual qualification.
When should I get Certit?
Choose Certit if you want a straightforward standard exam without specialised versions. Roma Tre offers one exam system for each CEFR level from A1 to C2. If you need the certificate by a specific deadline, check the current examination dates and result-processing times with your chosen centre before booking.
